What is Corporation Tax?

Corporation Tax is the tax UK companies pay on their taxable profits, covering trading profits, investment income and chargeable gains. A company self-assesses the amount due and reports it to HMRC through its own tax return rather than receiving a bill calculated by HMRC.

In practice, in the UK

Corporation Tax is charged on a company’s profits for its accounting period, which usually but not always matches its financial year, and the company itself is responsible for working out what it owes rather than waiting for HMRC to assess it. The calculation starts from the profit shown in the statutory accounts and then adjusts it: some accounting expenses are not deductible for tax purposes, some tax reliefs — such as capital allowances — replace the accounting treatment entirely, and gains or losses are recalculated under tax rules that do not always match accounting ones. A company with no Corporation Tax to pay still generally has to tell HMRC that, rather than simply staying silent, since HMRC otherwise expects contact from every company within the regime.

In Odoo

Odoo does not calculate Corporation Tax itself, since the calculation involves adjustments — capital allowances, disallowable expenses, brought-forward losses — that sit outside the double-entry accounts. What Odoo needs to provide is a clean, fully reconciled set of accounts to start the computation from: unreconciled bank accounts, unlettered supplier balances or unposted year-end adjustments all flow straight into an incorrect starting profit figure.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the accounting profit in the statutory accounts is the taxable profit, without adjusting for disallowable items and reliefs.
  • Treating capital allowances as optional bookkeeping detail rather than the mechanism that replaces depreciation for tax purposes.
  • Staying silent with HMRC in a period with no tax to pay, instead of confirming that position.
