The register matters most at two moments a business often treats as routine bookkeeping rather than as points where errors compound: when an asset is added, and when it is disposed of or scrapped. An asset bought but never entered onto the register keeps depreciating in nobody’s records and, more importantly, its cost may never be claimed for capital allowances at all. An asset disposed of but not removed from the register keeps generating depreciation charges and can distort the fixed asset note in the accounts for years afterwards, quietly overstating what the business actually owns. Because the register feeds both the accounts and the tax computation, an error in it does not stay contained to one report — it travels into both.

The discipline this depends on is procedural rather than technical: every qualifying purchase has to actually be entered as a fixed asset rather than expensed by mistake, and every disposal has to be processed through the asset record rather than simply removed from the balance sheet through a general journal entry.
